University Place Elementary School Library

My name is Kandi Massey, and I’ve proudly served as the Library Media Specialist at University Place Elementary School since 2021. Before the library found me, I spent over 10 years teaching English in grades 7–12. Those years shaped how I see reading not just as something we learn, but as something that helps us make sense of the world, find our voice, and feel connected.

I believe a library should feel less like a room and more like an invitation. The UPES Library is a space where every student belongs, whether they love books, are still figuring them out, or simply need a place that feels safe and welcoming. Students participate in weekly library lessons designed to build a love of reading, strengthen information literacy, and support classroom learning. In addition to scheduled class visits, the library offers flexible access for book checkout, research, and independent exploration.

The library is open daily from 8:00 a.m. to 2:45 p.m., ensuring students have consistent access to books, technology, and digital resources. In 2022, the UPES Library earned Exemplary Library Status, reflecting our ongoing commitment to literacy, equity, and high-quality learning experiences.

Beyond the library, I also serve as the 21st Century Community Learning Centers Site Coordinator and Summer Learning Director. Through these programs, I create hands-on, engaging experiences that support the whole child and strengthen connections between our school, families, and community.
