My name is Kandi Massey, and I am honored to serve as the Library Media Specialist at University Place Elementary School. With a background in English education and a Master of Library and Information Studies from the University of Alabama, I bring a deep commitment to literacy, equitable access, and meaningful learning experiences. Prior to becoming a librarian, I taught English for more than a decade in grades 7–12, which shaped my belief in the power of reading to connect, support, and inspire students.

At the heart of my work is a simple philosophy: everyone is welcome in the library. The UPES Library is a place where all students regardless of reading level, background, interests, or needs can explore, discover, and feel a sense of belonging. My goal is to create an environment that is warm, inclusive, and student-centered, where every child can find books that speak to them, tools that challenge them, and opportunities that spark their curiosity. This means offering diverse materials that reflect our students, providing equitable access to technology and resources, and creating an environment where every learner feels safe, supported, and valued.

In addition to weekly library instruction, I also serve as the 21st Century Community Learning Centers Site Coordinator and Summer Learning Director. Through these programs, I work to provide enriching, hands-on experiences that support the whole learner and strengthen our school community.

Outside of school, I am a mom to one adult daughter and caretaker to a lively collection of pets that keep my home wonderfully full: two Dobermans (Phoenix and Loki), two cats (Birdie and Fig), one hedgehog (Flower), and one bearded dragon (Sheldon Lee Cooper).
